FLOWERS IN MY YARD

Sunshine the white cat.
My home is located in Stephenville, Texas. We normally have 31 inches of rain with practically none of it falling between June and September when the temperature often reaches the high 90s. Since it's hard to grow flower and vegetables under these conditions I have established flower beds in plastic wading pools by placing plastic buckets of dirt in the water and putting the flowers in these pots. In order to keep the water fresh and free of mosquitoe larvaes I turn goldfish loose in the pools. Some of the fish live as long as three years. Many of my flowers come back every spring from the roots. To keep mosquites from gathering in the foliage in the yard I spray a weak solution of Ivory dishwater soap in water with my hose sprayer. If I get the soap in with the fish they will die so I have to be very careful.

GOLDFISH POND. Since the nearest source for goldfish is thirty miles away I keep up to four dozen in this pond make out of a bathtub.

HARDY HIBISCUS comes up from roots every spring.

MEXICAN PETUNIA from Florida cuttings. Third year to come back from roots.
